The Legion of Honor is the French national order, established by Napoleon Bonaparte on May 19, 1802 following the example of knightly orders.
Belonging to the Legion is the highest distinction, honor and official recognition of special merits in France.
Admission to the Legion is made for outstanding military or civilian merits by the president of the French Republic, who is ex officio Grand Master of the Legion.
The Legion of Honor consists of five degrees: Knight of Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Chevalier.
