Artists / National museum of Chechen Republic

The National Museum was founded on November 7th, 1924 as the Grozny district Museum of the History and Religion. Back then, it had only 150 of exhibit units. In the 1926, the museum was transformed into the regional museum of the local history.
Before the outbreak of the war in 1994, the Chechen State United Museum (with all branches) totalled in its collections approximately 230 thousand exhibit units. They included rare and unique items.
Shortly before the war, museum was housed in the building, which was a historical and architectural monument of the turn of the 19th – early 20th century. It was the former Azov-Don Bank building, which adorned the centre of Grozny with its beautiful architecture. During the war in Chechnya in 1994-1996, this historic building was virtually destroyed, and the museum has lost up to 90% of its collections (assets?).
On October 5, 2012 in Grozny took place the grand opening of the new building of the National Museum of the Chechen Republic. Today, the National Museum of the Chechen Republic has several exhibitions and is actively working on expanding its collections.
