Natalia Goncharova. Between East and West
Natalia Goncharova
Moscow, The Tretyakov Gallery, Krymsky Val, 10, Halls 60-61
16.10.2013 - 16.02.2014
As one of the most prominent and influential figures in early 20th century art history, Natalia Goncharova set the stage for nationalism in the rising Russian avant-garde. Her most significant talents rested in painting as well as other such monumental art forms as theatre, stage and costume design, and book illustrations.

Goncharova’s life and work coincided with and gained influence from other such famous players of Russian and French culture in that era, including Guillaume Apollinaire, Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, S. Lifarem, Marina Tsvetaeva, Sergei Diaghilev. Unique to her own method, though, was how she sought inspiration from a more primitive way of life, her way of turning to the pagan folk cultures of the past to establish new movements for the future.

An internationally-acclaimed persona, Goncharova’s artistic contributions can be found in most major collections of avant-garde art. At Tretyakov Gallery, the curators heading such large-scale projects as that of Goncharova’s exhibition intend to present a holistic picture of art, in all its forms, through this single artist’s work, through Goncharova’s multi-talented and multimedia contributions. Accordingly, this exhibition will display well over 400 pieces of paintings, graphic art, theater decorations and more, acquired from Tretyakov’s unique personal collection as well as from such places as the Russian Museum, the Regional Museum of Russia, the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Fashion Gallery Museum, the Museum Ludwig (Cologne), and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam).
