Artists / Vitebsk Popular Art Institute

Vitebsk Popular Art Institute was established by Marc Chagall in Vitebsk in January 1919, recruiting artists such as Kazimir Malevich, Ivan Puni, El Lissitzky, V. Ermalaeva and K. Boguslavskaya.
Malevich formed the Suprematist art group "Unovis - Establishers of the New Art", with his students from Vitebsk.
The Vitebsk People’s Art School was located at the mansion of the Vitebsk banker Israel Vishnyak that was nationalized after the October Revolution. This building on Pravda Street has survived and was given to the modern art center to establish a museum. The restoration of the building was included into the municipal investment program of 2013.
